Be the lifeline for little penguins in need
Your support gives little penguins, like Silver a second chance
Each year, penguins suffering from illness or injury associated with various environmental issues like food scarcity, disease, extreme weather and marine debris entanglement are admitted to the centre. The Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre is staffed with passionate team members, like Skye, who work tirelessly to provide life-saving care.
One such penguin, named Silver, arrived at the centre severely malnourished. Silver was found weak and underweight at the Penguin Parade beach one evening, having struggled to find sufficient food in the wild. She was too frail to fend for herself and urgently needed care.
Thanks to the expertise of the wildlife team, Silver received the nutrition and treatment she desperately required. Through a carefully managed feeding plan, hydration, and regular swims in the rehabilitation pool, Silver began to regain her strength. After six weeks of dedicated care, she was able to return to the wild, where she could once again join her colony and continue her life.
Little penguins confront many dangers, with the impact of climate change contributing to a higher intensity of extreme weather events such as heat waves. With each of these challenges, the future of little penguins becomes increasingly at risk, making our rehabilitation and conservation efforts all the more crucial.
While the centre continues to provide acute, life-saving care, Phillip Island Nature Parks with support from the Penguin Foundation, is also working on long-term solutions to protect little penguins in the wild. One of the key strategies is habitat restoration, particularly through revegetation efforts. By restoring native vegetation in key areas of penguin habitat, we can help mitigate the impact of heatwaves by providing cooler environments and ensure penguins have access to suitable habitat to provide critical refuge for moulting, breeding and successfully raising chicks.
Your Donation Can Make a Difference:
- $25 can provide essential care for a malnourished penguin like Silver, helping them regain strength and health.
- $50 will fund the rehabilitation of a penguin suffering from injury, disease, or heat stress.
- $100 helps restore critical habitats through revegetation efforts to protect natural environments for penguins.
- $250 equips our Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre with the tools and resources needed to care for more penguins in need.
- $500 supports long-term research and conservation projects focused on penguin health, habitat restoration, and species protection.
We cannot do this alone. Your donation enables us to continue providing urgent care to penguins like Silver, and to fund critical conservation efforts that will protect these incredible creatures for years to come.
